Suhab’s broad range of eco-products are helping users shift easily towards sustainable habits through smart and sexy products with minimum environmental impact. The Mexican brand describes their work as “little steps towards big changes” and accompanies its designs with campaigns that spread consumer consciousness about environmental issues and solutions.
The collective’s members are a mix of environmentalists and designers that work together to create integral solutions that take into account the products’ cycles and how its materials are obtained, used and reintegrated to nature when its productive life ends. Their products are targeted providing positive alternatives that promote recycling, composting and reusing. They work on different scales and materials, doing notebooks, bags, furniture and even compost bins for small residential spaces and gardens.
Products like Suhab’s portable ashtray address common bad habits such as throwing cigarette buts and ash on the street. The small, portable metal cylinder has an opening where you can insert the ash and buts while you reach the next trashcan.
Other designs from Suhab fight against the use of plastic bags at the supermarket through fashionable cotton bags. The colorful designs are one of those simple solutions that can become positive consumer habits. The bags’ prints range from Suhab’s own designs to guest designers and artisans. By using striking infographic prints about the harm of plastic bags to the environment, Suhab effectively communicates a message that complements the purpose of the product.
Besides eco-products, the brand also integrates social design practices by collaborating with women artisans from the state of Chiapas and Huichol Indians from Nayarit on the brands’ cotton bag line. These artworks and interventions are manufactured locally in their respective indigenous communities, preserving traditional techniques and providing a fair trade business scheme for them.
Suhab is constantly experimenting and creating designs that approach sustainability in everyday products, such as a portable USB drive made out of cork and recycled rubber. This incredible little device is Suhab’s way of making a statement about the burning of tires. This design separates itself from their traditional crafted products mentioned before.
The mission that drives Suhab has had great results so far with a Mexico City showroom and collaborations with other designers and stores. Although today Suhab calls them “little steps”, they are on their way of becoming tomorrow’s big changes in Mexico.
