Building Voices has launched an international competition seeking sustainable solutions uniquely suited for Hawaii and shareable globally. All entries should address the “quadruple bottom line” with sustainable approaches to the state’s social, ecological, economic, and indigenous culture. Design solutions can run the gamut in terms of topic, from architecture to transportation solutions, but must address two or more of the following areas: housing for all; food autonomy; resource independence; community centered mobility; and healthy citizens. Awards totaling $8,500 will be distributed to the top three winners. Online submissions are due April 5, 2017.

AWARD/PRIZE

The First Prize Winner will be invited to present their vision in Honolulu at the Hawai‘i State Capitol on April 22, 2017. First prize: $5,000 (travel stipend or cash award)  Second prize: $2,500  Third prize: $1,000 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We call on all designers to design for multiple topic areas: HOUSING FOR ALL, FOOD AUTONOMY, RESOURCE INDEPENDENCE, COMMUNITY CENTERED MOBILITY, and HEALTHY CITIZENS.

Designs must be structured around a QUADRUPLE BOTTOM LINE, being Socially, Economically, Ecologically & Culturally sustainable.

Designs should be uniquely suited to the Hawaiian archipelago, which stretches over 1,600 miles from east to west and has 8 main islands. All physical sites are located in Honolulu, the 4th densest city in the United States and the most isolated urban center on earth.
