The Harvard Graduate School of Design recently announced the third edition of the Wheelwright Prize, an open international competition that will award a $100,000 travel fellowship to a talented early-career architect. Although the Wheelwright Traveling Fellowship was only available to GSD alumni in the past, today’s relaunched competition is open to any architect in the world who received their degree from a professionally accredited architecture program in the past 15 years. Applicants will need to submit a portfolio, a research proposal, and a travel itinerary that takes place outside their country of residence. The competition accepts applications online on January 5. Registration ends January 16 and the deadline for submissions is January 30. The finalists and winner will be announced April 2015.

AWARD/PRIZE

he Wheelwright Prize is a $100,000 travel-based research grant that is awarded annually to early-career architects who have demonstrated exceptional design talent, produced work of scholarly and professional merit, and who show promise for continued creative work.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The primary eligibility requirement is that applicants must have received a degree from a professionally accredited architecture program in the past 15 years (after 2000). An affiliation to the GSD is not required. Applicants are asked to submit a portfolio, a research proposal, and a travel itinerary that takes them outside their country of residence.

Applicants will be judged on the quality of their design work, scholarly accomplishments, originality or persuasiveness of the research proposal, and evidence of ability to fulfill the proposed project.

JURY

An international jury will be announced in January 2015.
