The loss of open spaces for communication, interaction and integration has led to to a decline in community in many urban areas. The Gau:di European Student Competition calls for students to enter their designs for a new Gau:di Market Hall prototype made out of recycled materials from the Venice Art Biennale 2011. The competition challenges students to choose a site in an existing urban context, on which they are to design a small and multi-functional market hall that can satisfy a range of community needs (market, exhibitions, street theatre and musical performances), as well as simply being a place of meeting and interaction year round. Students should focus in on the social identity of their project, the use of economic and sustainable materials, and on the quality of its relationship to both the public realm and the local people. The winning design will be constructed and shown at the Venetian Campo San Francesco dell Vigna, near the Biennale Gardens, in September 2012. The deadline to register is October 15th and entries are due October 30th.
