What Design Can Do (WDCD) has teamed up with the IKEA Foundation and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to launch an international design competition to improve the lives of refugees. The What Design Can Do Refugee Challenge invites designers to create innovative solutions to better integrate refugees in urban areas. A wide variety of proposals are accepted. The competition organizers cite Johan Karlsson’s flat-pack Better Shelter design and the German dictionary Icoon for Refugees are two examples of ‘good’ refugee-friendly design. The five selected finalists will receive €10,000 each as well as mentorship from established designers to help bring their ideas to fruition. The submission deadline is May 1, 2016.
