After five years of silence, Detroit Electric [2] has resurfaced with the announcement that they will debut a battery-powered two-seater sports car on April 3rd. Headed up by former Lotus executive and Managing Director of Apple’s Asia operations Albert Lam, Detroit Electric promises to be the fourth automaker to be born in Motor City [3], creating 180 jobs by the end of 2013 with a production capacity of 2,500 luxury electric vehicles [4] each year.

Specific details on the car—such as range and price—are scant, but it is speculated [7] that the Detroit Electric EV will be based on the Lotus Elise and has already drawn multiple comparisons to the Tesla Roadster [8]. The burgeoning company describes the car as “certain to quicken pulses thanks to its bold styling, outstanding performance, exhilarating handling characteristics and impressive range.”

Lam founded Detroit Electric in 2008, and the company attributes their five year silence to a period of research and development. Having signed a lease that will place the company in Detroit’s iconic Fisher Building, Detroit Electric aims to resurrect the US electric vehicle [9] production that existed over 100 years ago. The company explains: “Early in the last century the electric vehicle industry was flourishing in Detroit and a company called Detroit Electric was at its very heart, innovating and selling more electric vehicles than any other company. By 1912 there were numerous American electric vehicle makers, with Detroit Electric both the market leader and the most prolific, going on to make around 13,000 cars – an electric vehicle production world record for the twentieth century.”

With just a teaser image to go on, Detroit Electric promises to unveil the two-seater electric sports car on April 3rd, with its global public debut to take place at the Shanghai Auto Show [10] on April 20th. From there, the company plans to launch a range of EVs, including two “other high-performance models” that will go into production by the end of 2014.
