DHV Architects Sustainable Head Office Remodel is a Finalist in the Dutch Design Awards

First designed in the 1970’s by DHV and David Zuiderhoek, DHV Architects ^[6]' home office is a stunning example of Dutch structuralism. Unfortunately, it was also beginning to show its age on the façade; so DHV decided to renovate the building while improving its sustainability ^[7] at the same time. The result is a structure that pays respect to its roots while embracing the future, and the project has been selected as a finalist in the Dutch Design Awards ^[8].

During the renovation ^[10], the character of the building, which is located in Amersfoort in the Netherlands ^[11], was left intact, from the airy floor plan to the ample daylight for workers. To build on this foundation, the HVAC, insulation and lighting was improved with sustainability in mind. White roofing material was used to provide sun protection and the wood framing on the windows were replaced to create a “transparent curtain wall,” making the building’s shape all the more evident.

DHV Architects is proud of the design and renovation ^[12], stating “the basis for the design was to realise communication between engineers from various disciplines and work activities, within a green and healthy environment.” The Dutch Design Award committee agrees, selecting the building as a finalist in the Design Awards competition. “The impact realised by good detailing and abstract design is stunning,” says to the committee.
