With a wall-size photograph of Fanuc watching over the booth, Vander Kooij’s Chubby Chairs were perched on shipping pallets at ICFF. Each chair is made from recycled plastic from refrigerators, ground down into a paste and printed, layer by layer, gradually building up the components of the chair. The 3D-printed plastic is as durable as a hard wood, and it’s made entirely from recycled materials.

Even the waste from the production of Chubby Chairs is reused, making one-of-a-kind Chubby Coat Hangers. When the robot is changing colors, the leftover plastic is then repurposed into candy cane-like hangers, which come in sets of six in assorted colors.

Also on display at Vander Kooij’s booth was the Flow Rocking Chair and the Pulse Low Chair, which come in a variety of colors. The Satellite floor lamp [7], which was recently revealed at Milan Design Week and is made from recycled CD cases, was also on display.

Fans of Vander Kooij who are visiting ICFF can catch the designer speaking at the ICFF Theater on Monday from 1:00 to 2:00. Material ConneXion’s Dr. Andrew Dent will lead a symposium with Vander Kooij about his approach to design, materials and technology.
