It’s been just over a year since a massive tornado leveled Greensburg, KS and rebuilding efforts have hit full swing since Inhabitat last reported. If you’ve been wondering what all the buzz is about, you’ll soon get an inside look at what’s been going on, thanks to Planet Green. Tune in Sunday, June 15th at 9pm ET/PT for the world premiere of GREENSBURG, an epic 13-part docu-series that chronicles the rebirth of this proud Kansas town (also catch a sneak preview on Friday, June 13th). Executive produced by Leo di Caprio’s Appian Way and Craig Piligian’s Pilgrim Films and Television, the series will showcase the Greensburg experiment as an example for the rest of the world to follow.
Master-planned and designed entirely by leading international firm BNIM, the new and aptly named Greensburg will be firmly built on principles of economic, social, and environmental sustainability. It will be the first city in the country to mandate that all buildings over 4,000 sf be certified LEED Platinum. And, as part of efforts to build a brighter future for Greensburg, the new eco-city will also feature a “business incubator” building that will house affordable office space for start-ups and retail. Frito Lay will donate $1 million to build the business incubator that is expected to open before the end of the year.
While many residents still reside in FEMA trailers, new residential constructions are popping up daily. Beyond the buildings themselves, the City of Greensburg is working closely with an all-star team of advisors and contributors that includes environmental consultant John Picard, USDA’s Rural Development team, Native Energy, The Discovery Channel, UTC Power and a number of other partners to lay the groundwork for a long-term, successful, green transformation.
