In 2010, a group of sustainability academics launched a global eco-social enterprise called MAYA to make sure their research would have real world impact. Now, the team has come up with a new way to raise funds for their sustainability initiatives whilst increasing UK wildflowers: Seedball. Each marble-sized Seedball is a mini-ecosystem in itself, where wildflower seeds are mixed with clay, peat-free compost and a smidgen of chili powder. When sufficient rain permeates, the seeds inside germinate — helped along by the nutrients and minerals contained within the ball — and the chili acts as a pest deterrent so the ball can degrade and the seeds can sprout. Each ball is approximately 1cm in diameter, making them easy to scatter.
