Calling all bird lovers! Welcome feathered friends into your yard with this DIY bird house [1]made from a reused crate. We spotted this bird-friendly DIY special over at Espirit Cabane [2], and it provides a great way to get crafty on a budget while also recycling an old crate. Although the instructions and diagram couldn’t be simpler, for the task ahead you will need to pick up a couple of tools: a sharp pair of pliers, a utility knife, a small saw, nails, and an eye bolt to hang the birdhouse.

To give you a jist on how it works, the sides of the crate are used for the floor, wall and roof. The crate’s corners help attach different parts of the birdhouse together and another corner becomes the ridge of the roof.

To build the house, first pick up an old crate — preferably one with some colorful designs or logos on it, and starting at the bottom cut apart the crate using the pliers and warp it into a diamond shape in order to help take off the sides and corners. Depending on the thickness of the wood, use your small saw or the utility knife to cut strips of wood the right length.

Nail these sections – the “shingles” – to the wooden crate corners. But before you nail down the last roof shingle, make sure to screw an eye bolt onto the ridge of the roof so that you’ll be able to hang it up. Then nail the birdhouse floor to the four wood corners and make the opening. This can vary depending on what type of bird you expect. Espirit Cabane came up with these sizing ideas: about 1 inch (2.7 cm) for a blue tit, 1 3/8 inch (3.5 cm) for a sparrow, 1¼ inch (3 cm) for a great fit.

Finally, hang up the birdhouse in a secure place, pop in some bird food, and watch out for your future feathered visitors!
