DWELL ON DESIGN DAY 2: Inside and Out
Dwell on Design continued today, with great design and discussion both inside the conference hall and outside, where prefab structures from kitHAUS, great green products, and sleek exterior grade furniture took center stage. Shades of Green Landscaping created the planted park appeal and softened the parking lot outside. Inhabitat featured kitHAUS in the past, but this time we were able to engage in a deeper conversation about sourcing materials, such the Brazilian Ipe wood featured in their latest designs.
Just a few trade shows ago products made of the recycled paper composite Richlite (also known as paperstone) were considered expensive and not readily available. At this year’s Dwell on Design SF Exhibit we found outdoor furniture created from surplus Richlite slabs assembled in ‘cutting edge’ new ways. DesuDesign presented Plateau, a new collection of multifunctional outdoor furniture made from the superbly durable paper composite material.
Dwell contracted with Back to Earth Catering for all the fantastic gastronomic creations.. from the zero waste organic boxed lunches to last night’s cocktail party favorite- potato and yam martinis.
Inside, the conversation continued to inspire. Moderator John Hockeberry opened with a conversation discussing The Scalable City?, leaving us to question the density of our local neighborhoods. Kirstin Ritchie, Director of Sustainable Design from Gensler, brought an engineering perspective, inspiring us to go home and inspect our belongings and materials to ensure the “greenness” of our lifestyles. After the break the topic went back to the large scale, looking more specifically at the density of housing, before closing with a panel on New Regionalism, with one of our favorite fellow bloggers, Geoff Manaugh, of BLDGBLOG.
Overall the past few days of speakers have left our minds spinning and inspired, filled with the type of evocative memories that have us looking forward to Dwell on Design in Los Angeles next year.
Check back later for old favorites and new products highlighted in the following weeks, and don’t forget tomorrow’s Community Forum talk at 3:30pm with Inhabitat’s Managing Editor, Emily Pilloton.
