The Ecomo Home [2] modular housing system is based on square modular units that can be used as living spaces, “play” spaces or sleeping quarters. The units can be easily joined together in a variety of arrangements to create virtually any home desired. Once a floor plan is laid out, additional decks can be added to the exterior to provide outdoor living space.

The homes are designed based on sustainable design principles [3] and incorporate low-maintenance materials. They are built in a factory in South Africa [4] to minimize construction waste and then delivered to the site, where the modules are installed with a minimal impact to the environment. Solar energy systems [5] can be installed on the roofs to provide enough renewable energy for the homes to operate off-grid, which is especially key for remote locations where there are no grid connections.
