If you are tired of waste, you will probably love these holiday decorations made of mushrooms. That’s right. Ecovative, the company known for biofabricated furniture and Mushroom Packaging, has created a line of Grow It Yourself (GIY) ornaments that not only add beauty to a holiday tree, but offer a fun, sustainable science experiment for families. The mushroom ornaments grow super quickly in a period of just five days.

Ecovative’s GIY Holiday Kits come with six ornaments and a bag of their GIY Mushroom Material, made of dehydrated cornstalks and mycelium. To grow the ornaments, families re-hydrate the Mushroom Material, place it in the ornament, and watch it grow.

2016 is the first year Ecovative has offered the GIY Holiday Kit. Ecovative CEO and co-founder Eben Bayer told Inhabitat, “There’s a lot of waste around the holidays. We wanted to solve that problem using biological technology, but also raise awareness.”

At the end of the season the ornaments can be utilized as a teaching tool a second time to help kids learn about composting. Bayer said the ornaments can either be broken into pieces for a compost pile or bin, or they can be hung on a tree outside so kids can watch them break down – he said that process will just take more time a tree trunk takes longer to decompose than sawdust.

Creatives have utilized Ecovative’s Mushroom Material (which is also sold separately) to grow other fantastic projects, from wedding dresses to lamps. Of the ornament kit, Bayer told Inhabitat, “We wanted to do something fun for the home but also engage artists and designers and kids, who are the future artists and designers and inventors, with green, biology-based technology. Folks hear a lot about innovations in biology and we’re providing concrete examples of how biology can be used to make new, sustainable materials.”

Ecovative plans to offer more seasonal kits in the future; watch for one around Earth Day. For now, you can purchase a GIY Holiday Kit for $30 here.
