Gallery: Elio Motors Unveils Three-Wheeled 84 MPG Car That Costs Only $...

A brand new car that gets 84 MPG and costs less than $7,000 sounds too good to be true, but Elio Motors just unveiled a new three-wheeled vehicle that hits all those marks. The affordable two-seater Elio gets amazing mileage, and it’s small enough for a congested urban environment.

The Elio is pretty small at only 160 inches long with a 110 inch wheelbase. But even though it is small on the outside, Elio Motors says that the car has been designed to fit 95% of all men.”The tallest person we have had in the Elio is a 6’8″ former college basketball player, the largest is a 6’3″ 325 lb man.” The Elio has room for two passengers that sit in tandem, which means that the passenger sits right behind the driver. Elio Motors also says that the Elio is safe with a Safety Management System that includes three airbags – a reinforced roll-cage frame, anti-lock braking system, and 50% larger crush zones than similar vehicles.

Because of the Elio’s small size, the company was able to achieve a high fuel economy rating without the use of an electric motor or hybrid powertrain. Instead the Elio is powered by a three-cylinder 1.0L engine that generates 70 horsepower. The Elio is rated at 84 mpg on the highway and 49 mpg in the city. Thanks to its eight gallon fuel tank, the Elio can travel up to 672 miles on a single tank of gas. It can also reach speeds over 100 MPH, and 0-60 mph in under 9.6 seconds.

When the Elio goes on sale it will be built at Elio Motors plant in Shreveport, LA beginning in the spring of 2015 with a starting price of only $6,800.

Kathy….good comment. I was wondering the actual production date Myself. These reoccurring articles always make it sounds like it’s finally “unveiled”. This car should not take this long! Hope price stats low because they will have a hard time with other reasonable priced cars

About Elio …You can file a charge back with your credit card company for a refund due to the false production dates. If enough people would do this the credit card company will encourage them to correct their false advertising. If he files bankruptcy it will be too late for a refund. Also if its ever produced, make sure you budgeted at least $15,000. Your agreement states sales price is not guaranteed. Also your deposit does not guarantee they will ever sell you a car or make these. Mr. Elio says if the car sold today he could not sell it for less than $7300. Yet he refuses to make this public by changing the advertised price. Earliest possible production start, if they raise $240 million in the next few weeks, is mid 2016. If this car is ever produced I can buy one the first year right after reservation holders. If they can make these as fast as they claim then there will be plenty to buy the first year, if its ever produced. Prices will only increase in the next 3 years and I’m sure there are many costs he did not consider. There is not a production date scheduled at this time.

It would be better if it could sit 2 and still have some space for luggage.

About time for this type of low cost car that delivers. This shows the creative ability and foresight to show what can happen. I will buy at least 2 when it comes out for sale in 2015

Excited to see this development hit the road! Finally, a safe commuter vehicle for the short trips to/from work. Sure beats riding a 400cc scooter in nasty weather.
Questions- Do you foresee any problems registering/insuring the Elio in Canada? Any thoughts/plans for a rear window?

Where would you put groceries or other packages you would buy at the store?

Where are the \”BLINKERS\”? Especially on the rear. And will this car withstand mild bumps without \”BUMPERS\”?
