Claesson Koivisto Rune [2] are set to unveil a new lamp [3] made almost entirely from paper pulp at this week’s Milan Furniture Fair [4]. Dubbed DuraPulp, the lamp’s material is totally renewable and was conceived as collaboration between the architecture/design firm, lighting company Wästberg [5], and forestry industry company Södra [6]. The lamp successfully redirects conventional paper-use methods in the lighting industry and develops a product so great that it still meets standard function and design expectations.

About a year ago, Claesson Koivisto Rune and Södra developed the Parupu chilldren’s chair produced out of the same DuraPulp material [8]. The two companies came together once again to merge electricity and light into a fully-integrated paper product.

Wästberg’s philosophy of combining old wisdom and ground-breaking technology helped push the project along. Wästberg acknowledges that the use of paper popularized many “lamp shades” throughout history. This project modernizes the use of paper as a material by using it as structure instead of just as a diffuser. The paper light fixture is designed to take advantage of energy-efficient and long-lasting LED bulbs [9].
