This is a great idea, although giving the prizes away for “free” seems quite senseless to me. The people who added you to their newsletter mostly are already a fan of you and did that by their own before
Same about facebook. And new “won” fans of this website could easily block the newsletter again and find this type of marketing a bit annoying :/ Well, I would! Though I’m a pretty big fan of this site ^^
my lunch i will take (in reusable containers) less impact i will make
As a recent college graduate, I know all too well the cost of school supplies (even when the economy is decent). I have friends that are out of work and they have children returning to school. I intend to give the items to them; not just to help them out, but to let them know of the sustainable alternatives that are out there.
You know, I have a kind of quirky obsession with bags (probably all the books I like to carry around), and not only do these bags look really good for back to school, the company is super cool which makes me feel even better.
You wouldn\’t believe,
To my delight,
Getting online to find
A giveaway by Inhabitat,
A fair labor, and also green
backpack for school,
I\’ll look soooo mean!
I\’ll do my part,
By walking to school,
And along the way,
I\’ll tell my friends,
That going green
(and reading Inhabitat.com)
Is cool!
Please Please Please
Let me win.
Thanks
PS. Love your work
As a recent college graduate, I know how expensive school supplies are (even when the economy isn’t tanked). I have friends that are out of work and they have children going back to school. I will give these supplies to them- not just to help them out, but to show them that even in a small way, they can live more eco-consciously.
I am packing my kids WASTE FREE lunches!
W ater Bottle, BPA Free
A PeopleTowel
S tainless Steel Bento
T oGo Ware
E co-Friendly lunch bag
F resh Fruit
R aw veggies
E xotic rice rolls &

For back-to-school this year, we plan to buy only recycled paper products and all eco-friendly school supplies. For snack we are going to make our own and pack it in a reusable container as well as a reusable water bottles. Lara
Bought only recycled–
pens and paper–a snap!
To recycle my brain cells,
I’ll go take a nap!
Im going to make sure we have eco friendly supplies, recycle all school documents not needed, and have a fantastic time doing it all
Sooo, never done a comment before but ….going into my junior year i plan to….
Carpool
Reuse binders
Eat some local food
Appreciate the greens
Try to not use plastic bottles
Enlist my friends to do the same
and
Create a new (greener) me
I actually intend to continue doing what I’ve been doing. I will take the bus to school, like I always do, and I will walk around campus instead of using the buses to get around, even though it’s murderously hot here in Florida right now.
Beyond that, I will continue to recycle just about anything I can recycle and I will likely not print out as much stuff as I did last year for the classes I teach or take. Most of that stuff ends up getting thrown away by students or recycled by me anyway.
So, yeah. I hope that’s green enough.
Green is the color of my teen daughter’s hair;
Earth friendly school supplies seem only fair!
She buys used clothes and recycles everything that she can;
She’s growing up loving Gaia and is an Inhabitat fan!
What more can I say about this earth child of mine?
She’s so much greater than my verses (which are less than divine!).
I will…
Carpool
Reuse binders
Eat local produce
Air dry sports uniforms
Try to not use plastic bottles
Enlist my friends to do the same
in order to CREATE a new … greener me
to be green at school,
i’ll reuse, reuse, reuse.
Recycle that paper so that everything doesn’t turn into vapor.
1 & 2 done…

Hey!, I will be walking to school (40 minute walk), eating organic lunch that is fully disposable no plastic water bottles etc, and in addition ALL the school paper that im using this year has been recycled 100%!
I hope I win the Contest!
We are reusing any supplies we can from last year, as well as things we have already around the house, including my son\’s backpack that is still in really good condition. For supplies that we still needed, we purchase supplies with as high of a recycled content percentage as we can find, or that are made from sustainable or natural materials. My son will be taking his lunches in reusable containers, and most of his food is local and organic.
I heard Kermit say “it ain’t easy being green”/
I feel him from the heart it takes responsibility/
I stumbled on inhabitat, they showed me how to make it fun /
So when return to school I’m gonna tell everyone /
And what’s the best way to tell’em is to show’em style /
With a fresh eco – friendly backpack THAT’S HOW!!!
I plan to help my kids use less paper, and to become an advocate for healthier school lunches.
I admit I have just now learned of @Inhabitat. A newly Interior Design Major and I am EXCITED about that! I have big dreams and plans to make this world a better spot! I love the planet! I love it a LOT! I reduce my carbon footprint at every chance I get. I hope that I can get other people down with it! It ALL starts with me and the choices I make. One day at a time, making this world a better place!
My grandson was supportive
While I finished school
I graduated in ’09
He thought that was cool.
He’d really like this backpack
And all the other stuff
He doesn’t ask for much
He knows when ‘nough’s enough.
He’s used the same backpack for four years. He gives away his toys when he becomes disinterested in them. He doesn’t nag for new clothes- ‘It’s cool to wear favorites!’. He loves to walk/skateboard/take the bus places. And he doesn’t mind that I pick up the trash as we walk along. *G*
my daughter changed apartments
which was really cool
because instead of driving
now she can walk to school
As I go to learn, no gas will I burn because my folding bike is what I like.
Biking to school with kids this year and just bought them stackable lunch containers to eliminate packaging!
We are walking to school to save on gas and emissions.
I’ll pack my lunch bag with organics
and help grow more at our Beach Elementary School Garden.
I’ll sort my compostables from my recyclables.
Every day is “NO TRASH LUNCHES Day”.
I’ll ride my scooter or walk each morning
with my friends on the Walking School Bus.
My school makes it easy to be green. I can’t wait to get back to see my friends!
We are using Paper Mates new bio-degradable pens and pencils this year for all the kids school supplies. It\’ll help make a big difference.
I’ll lace-up and walk
Instead of ride
To save the earth
And show Eco-pride
I’ll save a tree
And paper I’ll reduce
By turning the sheet over
For another use.
That’s how I’ll be
Green as green as can be
As I improve my mind
And save mankind!
It is to be conscience, to be active, which will make my cause to be
green, always.
I\’m green schooling it this year for sure…Nothing like using paper back to back…old homework assignments and such can be turned into sketch paper. I plan on keeping a water bottle at my side throughout the year…no more purchased water bottles from me. Reuse!!
I’m the ultimate green student – recycling myself midlife to reuse my brain and reduce my frustration. It’s back to school at 45 for a MS in Sustainable Design… watch out kids, lady with a backpack full of attitude and a passion for green is powerwalking your way
All of this good for the environment… and guaranteed for life? This is truly the quality I have been looking for in products available in the market today. I have always been willing to pay more for something that is true quality and made by craftsmen. Now products for everyday use are becoming green and affordable. Super, can\’t say enough.

i will be riding my bike to school and while in school i will use my skateboard to commute from class to class. and since im an architecture student i will be doing the same thing i did last year, use recycled paper for any sketches or rough draft assignments i get.
As an architecture student i use a lot of paper so i make sure that i only use recycled paper for my sketches and rough drafts assignments. im also able to ride my bike to school and my skateboard to commute from class to class.i think this is a great opportunity to furthermore help the environment
I’ve got to be a super hero,
I’ve got to try to save the world,
I’ve got to reuse all my bottles
And all my plastic ware.
I’m gonna be a super hero,
I’m gonna try to save the world,
I’m gonna ride my bike to school
in the rain — I do not care!
I need to be a super hero,
So all the little boys and girls
will help the world.
Together we’ll recycle all our trash
I’ll save the trees by saving paper.
I’ll save my knick-knacks for use later.
Buy all my clothes at the local thrift shop.
Build my compost pile to the roof top…
I am, you see, a super hero.
Today I’ve got to save the world,
Piece by piece recycling all my trash.
Im going to bring my own waer in a reusabe bottle, recycle all of my arked up papers and buy as much recycled green products for school as possible
As a new senior in high school, I have a lot of potential to make this year very eco-minded, and to put those eco-minded ideas into practice with myself as well as my friends and even teachers. I am the vice-president of my school’s “Earth Club,” and the number one way to teach others is by example. Being able to tote such wonderful environmentally-friendly products not only puts me in the position of personally helping the environment, it also helps me spread the word about sustainable alternatives to polluting and disposable school materials. It also gives me a good reason to tell all the people I talk to at school about awesome organizations like Inhabitat!
Everyday I will show those who see,
How great “Eco-Friendly” can be!
I pack sustainable grub,
Help lead my Earth Club,
And post-lunch I will pick up debris!
Bagless lunches,
I have hunches,
that get there by walking,
is better then gawking,
out a car window,
keeping water usage low,
starting a compost,
so that I can boast.
Being Green
is better then being mean!!!
we recycle, reuse, redo neaerly everything…would type more but have a broken hand…1-finger typing no fun…;)
Walk
walking to work or school
doesn\’t make you less cool
it makes you lean
and very green
this year i will only walk to school.
It’s not poetry or verse but it works and Earth likes it =)
I’m already going green, but i’d like to win this because binders and notebooks that are ecofriendly cost an arm and a leg! what i’ve bought so far is as follows: recycled pencils made from old jeans and old US currency, 100% recycled paper, 1 100% recycled notebook, 12 75% recycled pens made by industries for the blind, and I will later be buying hemp shoes to replace my leather ones (I went vegetarian 4 months ago).
I’m encouraging my students to purchase recycled notebook paper and to use reusable water bottles rather than bringing in a new plastic one each day (as well as buying their Gatorade in large containers and putting it in reusable bottles to bring to school).
I’m looking forward to my long awaited return to college. I’m attempting to purchase as many ecofriendly products as possible!
I have two kids in college. Don’t know which one will get the loot when I win, maybe they’ll have to compromise on a split. Both are always looking for better ways to haul books, computer, food, etc. across campus. Can’t wait to hear from you. Thanks.
Those notebooks look sooooo sweet!
regards from Austria!!
Wow, nice price….. I am a teacher trying to be a role model…… I would really LOVE to get it…..
If chosen the winner I would give to my rising 6th grader what he could use and donate the rest : )
As a design major, I have to do lots of drawing- this means that I use a LOT of paper, and luckily not many textbooks. This maeans the easiest way that will have the largest impact will be to recycle all our work (that we no longer need) Our studio will have a recycle bin for this purpose alone, and I\\\’m sure It will fill up pretty quickly.
i teach art with an afterschool program for at-risk/disadvataged elementary school. we reuse, recycle and repurpose as much of our limited supplies as possible for our art projects. and since i don’t have my own classroom/space, i could definitely use the backpack to haul stuff around!
Back to school it is,
and to go green, i have lots of ideas for this.
Start by using mechanical pencils.
They make for great school utensils.
Follow that with an amazon kindle.
It makes text books tickle my pickle.
Of course you will need a laptop.
For that i will chose the Acer timeline.
It\\\’s attractive, as well as thin and light,
with a battery that will last you day and night.
To get to school don\\\’t forget to use public transportation.
Read a book until I reach my destination.
Also try to buy goods made from recycled materials.
It;s all so simple.
It\\\’s time for a change.
After all, we do live in a new age.
A time to reduce, reuse and recycle,
It isn\\\’t rocket science, much easier than riding a unicycle.
So this year lets all go green,
Help keep the world clean.
Hello Im a architect student in Mexico. I love your blog. i would love an Instinctive Bag ^_^
Hello!!! i would love an Instinctive Bag for college!!!
I plan on always using reusable packaging products everyday for packing my lunch for school, *strongly* encouraging all of my students to recycle all of their papers and even having them bring their recyclables to my room so that I can take them home for recycling at the curb (though I want to try to see if I can get a weekly plastic/metal recycling pickup at my school), and if I see other teachers printing on only one side, I will encourage them to print 2 sided copies.
I will… I will… Well… I will do most of the things people say here: I’ll continue walking, I’ll continue using public mass transportation, I’ll continue turning the lights off and making others do the same, trying to make “Greeness” a choosing factor when shopping, just to name a few… But I’ll do MORE! The actions stated before are no longer enough (And I invite all the people at the site to read this). As many Ted.com talkers say (And Inhabitat inspires): We have to go big! And I say big in the sense of scope (Big funding’s not mandatory). Big companies are no longer the sole culprit; we can all make a change: Get to know the problem and find the simplest solution… Associate yourself, as the Africans (And Al Gore) say: “If you want to go fast go alone… If you want to go far go together”. But as the Director of the WBCSD’s Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB) project say: “We want to go far, quickly! » Go big!
So… I’ll:
1) Get involved!
I’ll participate in Green projects, aka Auto Sustainable ones… Now, I’m working on one called Bio-schools that aim to build schools (In zones that are difficult to access) out of materials that you normally wouldn’t think of re use and that represent a problem worldwide (Ex: Tires)… It’ll be self-sustainable and due to the lack of capable staff for teaching in Colombia mostly taught virtually.
2) Get my voice heard!
Demand more out of the Government and out of the enterprises! Make them know that Green could be a strategic move and differentiate themselves in the market. We’re going to have a one day event sponsored by the major companies of the region that have presence of Green Engineering in them, invite national and international experts to show a light on how green is essential and entrepreneurial. A student organized event that we fought hard to be Green themed, I’m part of the organization team.
3) Devore knowledge…
Kaisen: Japanese for “Do it better every day”, and in order to make it better every day you have to know how. But knowledge’s not only in the books. Places like Inhabitat are great to get up to speed with what’s current and to find inspiration.
4) Go green as deep as you can.
Everything’s a matter of choice… So choose Green shopping! If I win, you’ll save me a really expensive shopping spree (Since most of those things are not even in Colombia)
5) Make it cool!
As Majora Carter, the Macarthur-winning founder of Sustainable South Bronx says: “Make green the new black”… Get it in cocktail conversations and in talks with friends or a part of your everyday outfit: I’ll love to have my College look green (Get the hint? ;D).
Since enterprises are demand driven. If consumers demand Green, they’ll provide.
6) Work on my rimes!
Since it’ll help me get the bag, the binder, and the notebooks that I dream of.
I’d be biking everyday that I can, snow permitting, this school year and sporting the sweet eco-friendly gear to show-off/inspire others about being green!
I’d be biking everyday that I can, snow permitting, this school year and sporting the sweet eco-friendly gear to show-off/inspire others about being green!
Back-to-school can be such a chore,
preparing is always a bore.
But with eco-loot like that bag,
and sweet school supply swag,
my classmates MIGHT turn greener than me!
Indeed your site focuses on growan(green) for it has assuredly grown many things. A following, a lifestyle, a dream, and a ideal. Thanks, for information I am sorely pressed to use.
Almost makes going back to school bearable!
I’m planning on packing my lunch in a reusable stainless steel lunch box this year, to cut out the plastic bags people often use to pack and the disposable styrofoam trays offered by the school cafeteria. Very excited!
I will walk to class
not drive, and I’ll bring my lunch…
green is the new black

Here’s me green back-to-school haiku.
Cycling to class
Emits no carbon gases
And your butt looks better.
This semester as I travel to study abroad in China, exploring the culture and the architecture having a bag to carry my things is always a must. The backpack will help as walk exploring the cities and the sketchbooks are a vital in my daily sketches of the sightes and sounds all around me
I will be walking to campus
four words: walk more, drive less
I drive too often when I could easily walk. I live close enough to campus, and at least until November, the weather is usually nice enough to do so in the fall.
Heyo,
I am an Environmental Technology major and I am run the CSAF (campus sustainability assessment framework) program within my school. I\’m returning for my second year and would love to sport this great eco package back to school. For the amount of writing and school work I do I feel winning this package would be very eco friendly step!
back to school, it’s fall
learn the golden rule: grow green
Packed lunch, walking there
During this semester in my Photovoltaic Intoduction class I will explain to everyone the importance of becoming more ‘environmentally friendly’ as I’m sure many discussions will be brought up. I have bought some recycled materials; rulers, pens, pencils, water bottles, composition book, and clothes. I would be very grateful to win this contest, however if I did not it would not stop my everyday goal to create a better, cleaner, safer and greener world.
i like how your products are environment friendly and have amazingly cool designs!!! there are so many cool things on your website!
“Take the bus,
ride the bike,
walk to campus,
hey, why not hike?”
The options are many,
I tell myself so,
to live a life in the university,
that saves nature and some dough.
My plans for greening my “back to school” routine are pretty obvious: taking my own lunch, using a reusable cup for coffee, and getting there on my bike (or occasionally the bus).
My kids would absolutely die for this lovely giveaway! I have one in college and two in high school. It would be well used. I love this website — so many cool things to browse. Thanks for the good work!
I am trying to go Green,
But I fear it is just a Dream.
The Schools ask for lots of Paper,
Trying to find recycled is a caper.
I want to do my best,
At giving Mother Nature a Rest.
My kids just want to fit in,
and I want to grin,
knowing with eco-loot,
I won’t get the boot!
Thank you, for holding such a wonderful giveaway, I truly appreciate it! I am a 3 time cancer survivor (age 10, brain tumor[Menegeoma], age 21 Uterine Cancer [discovered when I was 6 months pregnant], age 36 skin cancer), as well as a Service Connected Disabled Veteran (US Army 6 years).
would love to have all this cool things for school.
I take the bus or walk to school
because the best of us think its cool.
Taking notes on my refurbished Mac
to save the trees and give a little back.
Getting my degree will be a chore
but then I\’ll open my green store!
I am attending Saint Louis University and I am part of the inaugural Masters of Sustainability program! Yeah SLU and Sustainability!
Now is the school year of our discontent
Cheaply made backpacks, and ten cent notebooks
The garbage cans fill with recyclables
Feel the breeze on your face, the sun out back
Earth is worth protecting can’t you see that?
This small deed may not make a difference
For as Henry David Thoreau stated
“Thank God men cannot fly, and lay waste the sky as well as the earth.”
But there’s always a chance to start the trend
The trend to go green and truly mean it
I mean it this year I want to do good
Starting now, with my poem to Go Green.
Those colored note books are amazing. I might be one of the oldest students in the class but I can sure look stylish with this packet of goodies!
Want to hear my opinion? Well: edpalacio should get it!
))
I’m an environmental engineering student living on nothing. I’d love to sport your Eco Loot — things I love created in ways I support, but not things I can afford.
I am currently working in a lab at a university as part of my research project and we are conducting research on phytoplankton ecophysiology. Phytoplankton are primary producers and account for about half of the photosynthesis on our beautiful planet. Most of us attribute oxygen production to the plants and trees on land but actually, we have phytoplankton to thank for about half of the oxygen produced. Since phytoplankton are so small, it is easy for us to overlook their contribution. Phytoplankton are important to the health of our planet because they take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Unfortunately, excess carbon dioxide caused by human activity has resulted in ocean acidification that affects phytoplankton physiology. I am currently going to school to become a biological oceanographer. I love riding my bike to school and I am currently working on converting our car to electric. I am doing this with my hubbie who is also going to school to become a physical oceanographer. We need the car only during the winter when it snows since we still ride our bikes in the beautiful Oregon rain. Eventually we would love to live completely off the grid but as renters, we are somewhat limited. The backpack would be super sweet since I do not have a backpack yet for school because my almost 20-year-old backpack saw the end of its days as my backpack last spring and has since been upcycled by a local artist.
This year I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’m using a digital tablet, pen scanner, and OneNote to take my notes for class rather than using paper notebooks or notepaper.
I am a subscrier
I am a subscriber of Inhabiat via email and RSS. I am a fan of Inhabiat on Facebook. I shared the contest w/ over 400 friends on Facebook. I do not tweet anymore since they perm disabled my account. Even though I do not go to school and not a student, I would def use those school supplies when I work with my autistic clients. I have a lot of paperwork and that I would use them! It def comes in handy!! lol
Awesome, I heart inhabitat! I also heart free stuff!
Kindergarden started in San Francisco last week. My daughter’s destination is new, but the journey is familiar perched atop the rack of Dad’s bicycle, and her “new” pink backpack was the perfect Goodwill treasure. She doesn’t spend any time wondering if we could afford a car or a new backpack. She is growing up with the wonder and adventure that comes with simple, self-made, shared, and self-propelled. More importantly, the other kids all want a turn on the back of the bicycle — and other parents have decided to give it a try. For us, greening back-to-school isn’t about what we bring to class — it’s about what we can share.
I have begun commuting by bicycle everyday on my beat-up dog of a mountain bike. Each day I ride 9 miles round trip on nobby tires. In the month of august I have logged 135 miles for a total CO2 reduction of 132 pounds! It’s fun, but also hard work and I have to pack extra clothes to change into once I arrive. I sure could use a new backpack to carry all my gear in and an eco-friendly donation from inhabitat would certainly keep me from purchasing a cheaper, less eco-friendly bag.
I’ll be biking, hiking, and waste disliking;
Reducing, then reusing the products of my choosing;
Bringing my own fork, while I wait out the stork;
Garden food boosts my learning mood;
Packing for my health helps to spare the wealth;
Keeping the Earth free by saving one more tree;
Home to wherever I might roam;
Doing right to help the fight;
Being kind trumps being blind;
It’s only fair that I share;
It’s my choice to use my voice;
Going green because it’s clean!
I’m out the door and right on track…with my new spiffy backpack?
I will be giving up the bus route after picking up a new bike, increase my fitness, reduce my costs and carbon footprint!
I already do a lot to be more eco-friendly, including taking public transportation everywhere I go and making sure to use as little paper as possible, among other things. For this year I’m planning to start riding my bike to school, and checking the packaging on the products I buy to make sure I don’t get any with very harmful ingredients or materials, or any with excessive packaging.
As a theatre major, recycling and re-using are ingrained in us. Unless something is truly disintegrating we throw out nothing. Everyone in the program tries to do everything we can to be as green as possible, so being able to say that my stuff for school is green as well would give my class mates an added incentive to help us become the greenest group on campus.
(to the tune of Queen’s “We Are the Champions”)
I’ve gone back to school
time after time;
I’ve had the same backpack
since 1999.
Eco mistakes;
I’ve made a few…
But through high school, college, and now my MFA,
But I’ve learned to reuse!
I’m a recycler, my friend!
And I’ll keep on fighting – till the end!
I’m a recycler – I’m a recycler!
No time for garbage,
‘Cause I’m a recyclin’ – kind of girl!
I’ll print double-sided papers,
type onto a screen,
Instead of wasting plastic with pen and ink,
I’m going green!
It won’t be too easy,
my school lacks blue bins,
But with public transit, reusable containers, and my water bottle,
the earth’s gonna win!
I’m a recycler, my friend!
And I’ll keep on fighting – till the end!
I’m a recycler – I’m a recycler!
No time for garbage,
‘Cause I’m a recyclin’ – kind of girl!
Everyday I will empty the bucket that is my brain and sort through what has been collected there.
The junk thoughts will be weeded out, ground up and offered as compost, or blown to the wind.
But all the enticing visions of the day, all those that compel a closer look, those visions that with just a little cooking turn to reverie, those will be channeled down and tenderly bundled up to form islands of experience on oceans of serene white pages bound in the vibrant colors of the natural world. I will build bridges of associations, copy out the maps imprinted on my senses and nurture whatever formations emerge as this puzzling life lays out its pieces in the pages of my days.
And when the task is done, when I have put it all down, I’ll wrap and snap it all up and strap my sculptured dreams on my back, and out of my head I will head out on the road of the present moment
with wide hungry eyes and a breeze in my mind and a wildly fresh perspective, ready to listen, to look and to learn.
