As a recent college graduate, I know all too well the cost of school supplies (even when the economy is decent). I have friends that are out of work and they have children returning to school. I intend to give the items to them; not just to help them out, but to let them know of the sustainable alternatives that are out there.
You know, I have a kind of quirky obsession with bags (probably all the books I like to carry around), and not only do these bags look really good for back to school, the company is super cool which makes me feel even better.

As a recent college graduate, I know how expensive school supplies are (even when the economy isn’t tanked). I have friends that are out of work and they have children going back to school. I actually intend to continue doing what I’ve been doing. I will take the bus to school, like I always do, and I will walk around campus instead of using the buses to get around, even though it’s murderously hot here in Florida right now.
Beyond that, I will continue to recycle just about anything I can recycle and I will likely not print out as much stuff as I did last year for the classes I teach or take. Most of that stuff ends up getting thrown away by students or recycled by me anyway.
So, yeah. I hope that’s green enough.

Hey!, I will be walking to school (40 minute walk), eating organic lunch that is fully disposable no plastic water bottles etc, and in addition ALL the school paper that im using this year has been recycled 100%!

We are reusing any supplies we can from last year, as well as things we have already around the house, including my son\’s backpack that is still in really good condition. For supplies that we still needed, we purchase supplies with as high of a recycled content percentage as we can find, or that are made from sustainable or natural materials. My son will be taking his lunches in reusable containers, and most of his food is local and organic.

i will be riding my bike to school and while in school i will use my skateboard to commute from class to class. and since im an architecture student i will be doing the same thing i did last year, use recycled paper for any sketches or rough draft assignments i get.
As an architecture student i use a lot of paper so i make sure that i only use recycled paper for my sketches and rough drafts assignments. im also able to ride my bike to school and my skateboard to commute from class to class.i think this is a great opportunity to furthermore help the environment

As a new senior in high school, I have a lot of potential to make this year very eco-minded, and to put those eco-minded ideas into practice with myself as well as my friends and even teachers. I am the vice-president of my school’s “Earth Club,” and the number one way to teach others is by example. Being able to tote such wonderful environmentally-friendly products not only puts me in the position of personally helping the environment, it also helps me spread the word about sustainable alternatives to polluting and disposable school materials. It also gives me a good reason to tell all the people I talk to at school about awesome organizations like Inhabitat!

I’m already going green, but i’d like to win this because binders and notebooks that are ecofriendly cost an arm and a leg! what i’ve bought so far is as follows: recycled pencils made from old jeans and old US currency, 100% recycled paper, 1 100% recycled notebook, 12 75% recycled pens made by industries for the blind, and I will later be buying hemp shoes to replace my leather ones (I went vegetarian 4 months ago).
I’m encouraging my students to purchase recycled notebook paper and to use reusable water bottles rather than bringing in a new plastic one each day (as well as buying their Gatorade in large containers and putting it in reusable bottles to bring to school).
I’m looking forward to my long awaited return to college. I’m attempting to purchase as many ecofriendly products as possible!

As a design major, I have to do lots of drawing- this means that I use a LOT of paper, and luckily not many textbooks. This maeans the easiest way that will have the largest impact will be to recycle all our work (that we no longer need) Our studio will have a recycle bin for this purpose alone, and I\\\’m sure It will fill up pretty quickly.
i teach art with an afterschool program for at-risk/disadvataged elementary school. we reuse, recycle and repurpose as much of our limited supplies as possible for our art projects. and since i don’t have my own classroom/space, i could definitely use the backpack to haul stuff around!

Start by using mechanical pencils.
They make for great school utensils.
Follow that with an amazon kindle.
It makes text books tickle my pickle.
Of course you will need a laptop.
For that i will chose the Acer timeline.

with a battery that will last you day and night.
To get to school don\\\’t forget to use public transportation.
Read a book until I reach my destination.
Also try to buy goods made from recycled materials.
It;s all so simple.

After all, we do live in a new age.

I plan on always using reusable packaging products everyday for packing my lunch for school, *strongly* encouraging all of my students to recycle all of their papers and even having them bring their recyclables to my room so that I can take them home for recycling at the curb (though I want to try to see if I can get a weekly plastic/metal recycling pickup at my school), and if I see other teachers printing on only one side, I will encourage them to print 2 sided copies.
I will… I will… Well… I will do most of the things people say here: I’ll continue walking, I’ll continue using public mass transportation, I’ll continue turning the lights off and making others do the same, trying to make “Greeness” a choosing factor when shopping, just to name a few… But I’ll do MORE! The actions stated before are no longer enough (And I invite all the people at the site to read this). As many Ted.com talkers say (And Inhabitat inspires): We have to go big! And I say big in the sense of scope (Big funding’s not mandatory). Big companies are no longer the sole culprit; we can all make a change: Get to know the problem and find the simplest solution… Associate yourself, as the Africans (And Al Gore) say: “If you want to go fast go alone… If you want to go far go together”. But as the Director of the WBCSD’s Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB) project say: “We want to go far, quickly! » Go big!
So… I’ll:
1) Get involved!
I’ll participate in Green projects, aka Auto Sustainable ones… Now, I’m working on one called Bio-schools that aim to build schools (In zones that are difficult to access) out of materials that you normally wouldn’t think of re use and that represent a problem worldwide (Ex: Tires)… It’ll be self-sustainable and due to the lack of capable staff for teaching in Colombia mostly taught virtually.
2) Get my voice heard!
Demand more out of the Government and out of the enterprises! Make them know that Green could be a strategic move and differentiate themselves in the market. We’re going to have a one day event sponsored by the major companies of the region that have presence of Green Engineering in them, invite national and international experts to show a light on how green is essential and entrepreneurial. A student organized event that we fought hard to be Green themed, I’m part of the organization team.
3) Devore knowledge…
Kaisen: Japanese for “Do it better every day”, and in order to make it better every day you have to know how. But knowledge’s not only in the books. Places like Inhabitat are great to get up to speed with what’s current and to find inspiration.
4) Go green as deep as you can.
Everything’s a matter of choice… So choose Green shopping! If I win, you’ll save me a really expensive shopping spree (Since most of those things are not even in Colombia)
5) Make it cool!
As Majora Carter, the Macarthur-winning founder of Sustainable South Bronx says: “Make green the new black”… Get it in cocktail conversations and in talks with friends or a part of your everyday outfit: I’ll love to have my College look green (Get the hint? ;D).
Since enterprises are demand driven. If consumers demand Green, they’ll provide.
6) Work on my rimes!
Since it’ll help me get the bag, the binder, and the notebooks that I dream of.

This semester as I travel to study abroad in China, exploring the culture and the architecture having a bag to carry my things is always a must. The backpack will help as walk exploring the cities and the sketchbooks are a vital in my daily sketches of the sightes and sounds all around me

I’m an environmental engineering student living on nothing. I’d love to sport your Eco Loot — things I love created in ways I support, but not things I can afford.
I am currently working in a lab at a university as part of my research project and we are conducting research on phytoplankton ecophysiology. Phytoplankton are primary producers and account for about half of the photosynthesis on our beautiful planet. Most of us attribute oxygen production to the plants and trees on land but actually, we have phytoplankton to thank for about half of the oxygen produced. Since phytoplankton are so small, it is easy for us to overlook their contribution. Phytoplankton are important to the health of our planet because they take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Unfortunately, excess carbon dioxide caused by human activity has resulted in ocean acidification that affects phytoplankton physiology. I am currently going to school to become a biological oceanographer. I love riding my bike to school and I am currently working on converting our car to electric. I am doing this with my hubbie who is also going to school to become a physical oceanographer. We need the car only during the winter when it snows since we still ride our bikes in the beautiful Oregon rain. Eventually we would love to live completely off the grid but as renters, we are somewhat limited. The backpack would be super sweet since I do not have a backpack yet for school because my almost 20-year-old backpack saw the end of its days as my backpack last spring and has since been upcycled by a local artist.

Kindergarden started in San Francisco last week. My daughter’s destination is new, but the journey is familiar perched atop the rack of Dad’s bicycle, and her “new” pink backpack was the perfect Goodwill treasure. She doesn’t spend any time wondering if we could afford a car or a new backpack. She is growing up with the wonder and adventure that comes with simple, self-made, shared, and self-propelled. More importantly, the other kids all want a turn on the back of the bicycle — and other parents have decided to give it a try. For us, greening back-to-school isn’t about what we bring to class — it’s about what we can share.
I have begun commuting by bicycle everyday on my beat-up dog of a mountain bike. Each day I ride 9 miles round trip on nobby tires. In the month of august I have logged 135 miles for a total CO2 reduction of 132 pounds! It’s fun, but also hard work and I have to pack extra clothes to change into once I arrive. I sure could use a new backpack to carry all my gear in and an eco-friendly donation from inhabitat would certainly keep me from purchasing a cheaper, less eco-friendly bag.

I will be giving up the bus route after picking up a new bike, increase my fitness, reduce my costs and carbon footprint!
I already do a lot to be more eco-friendly, including taking public transportation everywhere I go and making sure to use as little paper as possible, among other things. For this year I’m planning to start riding my bike to school, and checking the packaging on the products I buy to make sure I don’t get any with very harmful ingredients or materials, or any with excessive packaging.
As a theatre major, recycling and re-using are ingrained in us. Unless something is truly disintegrating we throw out nothing. Everyone in the program tries to do everything we can to be as green as possible, so being able to say that my stuff for school is green as well would give my class mates an added incentive to help us become the greenest group on campus.

Everyday I will empty the bucket that is my brain and sort through what has been collected there.
The junk thoughts will be weeded out, ground up and offered as compost, or blown to the wind.
But all the enticing visions of the day, all those that compel a closer look, those visions that with just a little cooking turn to reverie, those will be channeled down and tenderly bundled up to form islands of experience on oceans of serene white pages bound in the vibrant colors of the natural world. I will build bridges of associations, copy out the maps imprinted on my senses and nurture whatever formations emerge as this puzzling life lays out its pieces in the pages of my days.
And when the task is done, when I have put it all down, I’ll wrap and snap it all up and strap my sculptured dreams on my back, and out of my head I will head out on the road of the present moment
with wide hungry eyes and a breeze in my mind and a wildly fresh perspective, ready to listen, to look and to learn.

I think that I shall never see
