With summer in full swing, it's time to head out to the beach for some time spent playing in the water and on the sand. Recently, twenty talented sculptors embraced this summer spirit quite seriously, creating an impressive collection of massive sand sculptures for the Weston Sand Sculpture Festival in the seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare, England. From a depiction of E.T. phoning home to De Niro as seen in Taxi Driver , check out these ephemeral artworks of some of Hollywood's greats.
The Weston Sand Sculpture Festival’s fragile works are incredibly detailed and beautifully crafted. This year the theme was “Hollywood” and several sculptors from around the world gathered on the English beach to take on the difficult task of bringing to life some of cinema’s greatest icons. Life-like, beautiful and awe-inspiring, the works include characters from Hollywood classics such as Batman and The Hulk, as well as famous directors like Alfred Hitchcock, who can be seen above looking sideways while holding one of his terrifying birds.
A granular Robert De Niro was also in the show, his Taxi Driver character sculpted by a Dutch artist. A Jurassic Park themed sand sculpture was another wonderful creation made from the finely weathered rock and mineral particles.
Short-lived but sustainable, these brilliant Hollywood-inspired sculptures surely delighted, but they also disappeared without a trace.
