In our post last week about Video Game Exercise Bikes we got some interesting comments pointing out other companies doing similar things to Cyclescore. Upon further investigation, it looks as though there’s already an industry term for this emerging field of videogame / exercise equipment hybrids: “exergaming”. Silly label, but its a million?dollar idea. Integrated athletic video games and equipment are gradually popping up all over the place in many different forms.

Notions of Expenditure is a project being led by A. Laurie Palmer from the University of Chicago that is looking for “speculative proposals to re-design exercise equipment to generate and store energy; and/or to retrofit gyms to function as local power sources linked to the grid.”

On a somewhat related note, why not have networked treadmills at gyms that can show your position in a “race” relative to other participants (it would factor in differences in pace and incline). One could “race” against people in your own gym, or a disparate group hundreds of miles apart. The payoff would be making treamill running interesting. Note: not intended for work. Just a thought.
Quick search on google finds some results, although it doesn’t seem there’s anything in mainstream use.
Braine,
Couldn’t agree with you more! Networked games are addictive enough as is – couple them with an excercise machine at your local gym and I think you’re onto the start of a solution towards addressing the high rate of obesity in North American kids today.
Wow good stuff. I’m glad some people are pushing this ahead. The idea about tapping back into the grid is great, if only gyms weren’t such vile corporations, I could see this as a great way to get new people in the gym. They could offer rebates on monthly gym membership based upon how many Kilo Watts you bring in. It would certainly make people feel better about having to pay their first born in membership fees, a little perhaps.
I think it will come around soon if someone isn’t already trying. Think of Dave & Busters which is popping up all over Southern California, someone has to tap into the pixel-zapping people created by the wonderful 80′s and 90′s.
And then once they include a full bar I’m there!
