The Ravenna Remodel by Atelier Drome renovated a 1950s mid-century modern home that was in desperate need of help, bringing it into the 21st century. The project was originally a 2 bedroom, 1 bath home, but the couple wanted to improve the use of space and be able to use the 2nd bedroom as an office/bedroom. The basic layout was kept intact, but the wall was removed between the 2nd bedroom and the living area to make the space feel larger. When guests come to stay, they can easily set up flexible screens to create a sense of privacy. The large desk in the office space works double duty as an extra table for holidays and dinner parties. A projector mounted above the fridge places the entertainment devices up and out-of-the-way and projects tv or films on a blank wall.
All of the windows were replaced with larger versions to let in more light and increase the connection with the yard and the outdoors. The kitchen benefits from new Energy Star appliances, a modern ceramic tile backsplash, floating shelves, and concrete countertops. The gray palette and linear tiles mirror the original brick fireplace on the opposite side of the living area. The homeowners are also avid collectors and wanted to make sure they had enough space in their tiny home for all their things. Storage is built into every room through cabinets, shelves, or closets, which helps make the home feel lived in but not over-cluttered. In the bathroom, the shower’s ceiling was dropped to make way for a large shelf space in the bedroom. Additionally, salvaged oak was used for the flooring, wood sliding glass door, wall-mounted oven and microwave, framing lumber, and baseboard trim, and extra insulation was added to improve energy performance.
