FIREFLIES – Networked Nighlight

Another member of the ITP networked nighlight club is John Schimmel, with his project Fireflies. Fireflies is similar to Networked Flower and Slumber Light in that consists of networked lights that people can use to non-verbally communicate with each other over a distance. The big difference is that the Fireflies lights are connected through a wireless network and respond to touch. The nightlights only become alive with the taps on their jars, and each jar can send and receive pulses to the other jars in the wireless network. They are meant to encourage rhythmic tapping (Morse code, anyone?) ? creating a new way for a family to share goodnight’s with each other. This sounds like a perfect accessory to campouts in the backyard.

This is fabulous. I can see it really taking off in apartment buildings and dorms.
I’d buy them if they were available, but it looks like I’ll have to make them on my own.

Hi Eric, this is a student project, so I’m sure its not available for purchase right now. However, if you contact the designer and express interest, you might be able to get him to make you one!
