Intelligent Energy just announced that their hydrogen Fuel Cell Black Cabs have hit the streets of London for the first time! The taxis are equipped with a fuel cell and a lithium polymer batter pack that gives them enough power to travel for up to 250 miles (roughly a full day of operation) without refueling. The goal of the project is create a fleet of zero emissions taxis in London in time for the start of the Olympics in 2012.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, wants to see Britain take the lead in fuel cell technology, and has announced plans to increase the number of hydrogen refueling stations throughout the capital. Johnson stated that the Fuel Cell Black Cabs, “are a shining example of British ingenuity, combining revolutionary fuel cell technology with an iconic design classic.”
The Fuel Cell Black Cabs were developed by a consortium of companies led by Intelligent Energy that included Lotus Engineering, London Taxis International and TRW Conekt. On March 22, 2011 Intelligent Energy organized an event where the taxis drove from the Forbes House (the headquarters of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) to the taxi’s base for most of the day, hitting up London’s most iconic landmarks along the way.
