The sexy Tesla Roadster may be driving into the sunset in the coming months, but Fisker is just ramping up its competitor, the $100,000 Karma range-extended EV. The Karma already has 3,000 pre-orders and is expected to be sold out through early 2012, according to company CEO Henrik Fisker: “Our sales are split fifty-fifty between early-adopting car enthusiasts and total non-car enthusiasts who just like that we are bringing something totally new to market. They recognize the infrastructure isn’t there for electric cars, and see we offer a stylish, stress-free alternative with no range compromises.”
The first Karma off the line will go to movie star Leonardo DiCaprio, with other celebrities and politicians like Al Gore and Colin Powell lining up close behind him. What’s got them in such a tizzy? The Fisker Karma offers sports car looks and performance with incredible fuel economy alongside the guarantee of long range: similar to the Chevrolet Volt, the Karma packs a range-extending engine to back up its electric motors, so drivers never have to worry about running out of juice on the road.
