The Floating Cinema will be used for on-board screenings, workshops and canal tours, as part of the collaboration between UP Projects [8] and film-maker artist duo Somewhere [9] (Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie). With its quirky name and vibrant colors, the project will suit the new “Extra-Ordinary” Program envisioned to animate the waterways of East London.

Duggan Morris Architects’ proposal was selected from a shortlist of four international practices including Nilsson Pflugfelder (London/Berlin), OBRA (New York/Beijing) and vPPR (London). Nilsson Pflugfelder [10] designed an assemblage of prefabricated elements [11]. Their one-size-fits-all approach resulted in a structure that can be attached to the river bank and transformed to create a maximum of various spatial configurations. OBRA [12]’s proposal is a house-boat whose foldable roof can be transformed into a screen and rotated to face the audience seated on the bank. vPPR [13]’s “Cinescope” is a combination of a kaleidoscope, a periscope and a camera obscura. The project’s main idea is in line with the other shortlisted proposals in terms of transformability – a large pull-up screen changes function and creates a movie screen.
