FLOATING ISLAND SETS SAIL IN NEW YORK CITY

We wrote about Robert Smithson’s floating island [1] about a month ago, but I just want to remind interested New Yorkers that the floating island has set sail today. The displaced chunk of Central Park will circumnavigate Manhattan everyday until September 25th, and will be viewable from various points on the Hudson and the East River from 8AM – 8PM.



This floating installation corresponds with a Smithson retrospective at the Whitney [2] which runs through October 23rd. According to the Whitney press release, “When the barge makes its trip around the island of Manhattan, New Yorkers will have a chance to see a reimagined fragment of their island floating by.” [2]

I encourage all New Yorkers to try to pop out to the waterfront sometime this week to witness Smithson’s amazing posthumous installation.
