‘Flux Cocoon’ Made From 3,600 Red LED Lights Wraps Around a Bridge in Lausanne, Switzerland

During the dark winter months many cities around the globe unveil stunning public installations that lift spirits with glowing lights. The Swiss city of Lausanne is currently celebrating the Lausanne Lumières Festival ^[6], and one of the most striking installations is a gigantic red knot made from 3,600 LED ^[7] lights. Created by architecture and design studio Allegory ^[8], the "Flux Cocoon" wraps around a bridge where it serves as a brilliant node between two pedestrian paths.

Shaped like a serving of spaghetti, Allegory ^[8]‘s Flux Cocoon wraps around a pedestrian bridge at Lausanne’s city centre. It sits at the crossing between a vertical elevator and a horizontal pedestrian bridge, ^[9] highlighting the path’s intersection. The low-energy installation shines light on people as they journey from one side to the other.

The temporary glowing installation was made by wrapping strings of flexible LED ^[10] lights around a wooden and metal structure. It was specially designed to be volumetric and bright so that it’s easy to spot from various points of the multilayered topography of the city. Flux Cocoon will be on display until February the 1st, 2013, so if you are around make sure to go and check it out!
