Gallery: Football Legacy Center in Santa Cruz, Brazil Raises Awareness ...

The center also takes advantage of natural ventilation and an integrated rainwater collection and UV purification system that provides fresh water to the center and community.

The 8th Annual Homeless World Cup drew homeless people from all over the world together to play soccer — and the organization decided to go far beyond just hosting the tournament. They gave even more back to the community by building a center where area children could play street soccer, and a center for women to learn and expand their economic potential. Inside, the community center includes classroom locker rooms, bathrooms, office space, and storage.

The building is designed like a ramp, so spectators can walk up onto the roof for a better view of the area and the game below. The ramp also serves to cover the building and provide shade below. The low-cost project aimed for a light footprint, so local materials and construction methods were used to build it. The center also takes advantage of natural ventilation and an integrated rainwater collection and UV purification system that provides fresh water to the center and community. Eventually solar panels will provide lighting for night games.

The project was sponsored by Nike GameChangers in partnership with Architecture for Humanity, Homeless World Cup, and local partners Organização Civil de Ação Social (OCAS), and Instituto Bola Pra Frente (BPF). Cameron Sinclair, Founder, Architecture for Humanity said: “We are thrilled that the Santa Cruz center is creating a lasting legacy providing resources to the community, a home for street-football, and an elevated voice for the Homeless of Brazil.” The 9th Annual Homeless World Cup will be in Paris from August 19th – 29th 2011.
