Mowing the lawn is usually considered a chore, but with a new award-winning device, it could become your new creative outlet. Recently named a 2014 Red Dot Design Award winner, the ‘Grass Printer‘ is an automatic electric lawn mower that makes it possible to manicure your yard without getting up from your seat. We’ve seen intelligent lawn mowers before – but the Grass Printer has an onboard touchscreen that makes it possible to mow graphics into your lawn based on a customized image.
If there’s one thing people love to do, it’s customize stuff. We’ve got personalized phone cases and vanity license plates. Well now, you can also customize your lawn. Using the Grass Printer (and a little bit of your own creative juices) graphics can be cut into a grassy area, based on an image that is sketched onto the mower’s touchscreen.
“The mower works within an area framed by sensor markers. Its blades are smaller than those on standard mowers, which allows for more rapid and accurate cutting. After the control system performs a series of calculations based on the sketch, small motors move the cutter shaft horizontally and vertically in accordance with the mower’s position within the sensor-defined area,” explain the Grass Printer’s designers on the project’s Red Dot Design Award page.
While clearly not a life-changing device, the possibilities for fun projects–as well as pranks–using the Grass Printer are endless. You could mow “Happy Birthday!” into your friend’s yard, or simulate your favorite crop circles just to freak out your neighbors. Of course if you really want to step outside the box, you could just plant a garden in your front yard instead of growing pointless grass.
