Like many Americans, you may be lighting up the barbecue this holiday weekend — but if you want to set yourself apart from the bands of boring black grills, take a cue from our guide to stylish green grills. From DIY [1] creations [2] to hot spots that also double up as planting pots [3], whether you’re cooking up a sustainably raised burger or a tofu dog, each of these grills will help you streamline your holiday resource use without limiting your fun!

Grilling gets environmental demerits for the new materials that go into a product that often sits around gathering dust. Most grills also require charcoal and lighter fuel to get hot. (And, of course, there’s the lumbering carbon footprint of your meat & mdash; but we’ll leave it to the green food blogs to help you with that.)

One day you may be able to get sun-kissed emissions-free fixin’s from the Lapin Kulta Solar Kitchen Restaurant [4]. The travelling eatery uses only solar energy to prepare its meals, which are cooked up in pots and pans that sit at the center of giant concentrating solar dishes.

The average Joe or Jane, sadly, won’t get the chance to enjoy Lapin Kulta, but at least you can use your grill to raise awareness about global warming with this radically repurposed globe grill [5]! You’ll be saving the Earth globe from a landfill in the process. Just make sure to use sustainable charcoal [6]!

If you’re not quite ready for that such a big statement, go for something smaller — way smaller. Put upcycled computer fan guards and an empty Altoids Mini [2] container to work as your grill, and with a single briquette you can cook up a wiener or a burger or a s’more! You won’t be able to churn about burgers in volume, but you’ll get big points for DIY style.

Another option if you’re short on space or if you don’t get the chance to grill very often is to have your barbecue double as a planter. Black + Blum make the BBQ work on an urban balcony with this terracotta-looking stealth grill [3] that stores your tongs and can grow veggies in the off-season.
