As the United States government continues to drag its heels on passing climate change legislation, it’s encouraging to see folks in Europe making moves in the right direction. Last week, the French government announced it would dedicate $2.2 billion to creating a network of battery-charging stations for electric vehicles. The plan came as part of a much larger initiative that aims to move France towards a cleaner transportation system involving electric vehicles.

In contrast to the US, very little of France’s energy comes from coal and near half comes from nuclear. It seems to me that we should sort out our energy production in the US before we start increasing demands on dirty sources via heavy EV use. Good for France, but I don’t want to provide any more reason to keep the US’s worst sources of energy around any longer than necessary by increasing demand.

We should be using Obama’s stimulus funds to put this electric charging infrastructure here in the US now. Barring that we will have to learn from our allies – the French!
