Featured on gallery walls, Artforum finds itself the subject of criticism and adoration instead of commentator.
San Francisco artist and teacher at the California College of the Arts Francesca Pastine has found a brilliant way to repurpose her old issues of Artforum. By carving each page, she reveals the guts of the magazine, incorporating the cover’s images into the rest of the composition. Forgoing any use of glue, wires, or staples, she lets each topography stand on its own. Taking the idea of earmarking to the extreme, she personalizes her own copy of a mass-produced publication. As carriers of information, the manipulated magazines become endowed with a new sense of value as artistic works in themselves. Featured on gallery walls, Artforum finds itself the subject of criticism and adoration instead of the commentator.
