Fun, Games and Stunts at COP 15

TreeHugger’s man in CopenHagen, Matthew McDermott , has to deal with more than just climate change; the place is evidently crawling with people pushing all kinds of agendas and issues, sort of a giant Causapalooza. Avaaz was at least on message; the clean room suit-clad aliens with green skin wandered all over asking anyone and everyone if they were “climate leaders” and where real climate leaders could be found. Read on for a roundup of other unusual sights to be seen at the COP15 climate conference .
Other Avaaz activists dressed up as Ents, marching through the Bella Center saying “We are not your climate loophole! A real deal means real [emission] reductions!”
Australian kids in pyjamas staged a bed-in on the anniversary of John Lennon’s assassination, singing (over and over) “All we are saying is give youth a chance!” They sang in tune, if not always unison. “All we are saying is cut greenhouse gas!”. Matt says “Call me sentimental, call me foolish, and I say this self-consciously, it brought a tear to my eye.” I cry at dog food commercials but would have run from this.
Even the vegetarians were there in force, reminding everyone that a Vegetarian Diet Could Cut Climate Change Mitigation Costs by 70%, If Enough Of Us Make the Switch.
Burmese protesters were there as well, complaining about the junta that has done a very good job at exploiting the country’s natural resources. But Matt wonders, “Exactly what this has directly to do with the climate change negotiations was lost on me even if the cause itself is a worthy one.”
