Functional Green is an installation by kollectiv stadtpark that transforms an old slaughterhouse in the second district of Vienna into a temporary space for experimenting with plants. Part of Vienna Design Week, the living art exhibit was conceived as a way to design and build with natural materials and discover the possibilities of growing vegetables on the structures. One of the coolest parts of the project is the living room scale aquaponics system which uses plants for filtrating byproducts of an aquaculture (crabs and fishes) as vital nutrients. In this circulating system, cleaned water comes back to the aquarium and allows for a symbiotic existence of the plants and the fishes.
