The electric Chevy Volt [2] may be a pretty cool green ride – but did you know it also makes a great Christmas Tree [3]? Engadget [4] reports that Vauxhaull, the British subsidiary of General Motors, is celebrating the holidays this year with a glowing Christmas tree made from Chevy Volt parts! The electric tree was designed by artist Gary Card [5], and it will light up the Kings Cross Filling Station [6] until the new year.

Iconic set designer and illustrator Gary Card was chosen by Vauxhall and KXFS to dream up the upcycled tree [8]. His vision for an “Electric Christmas” was to create something that echoed its mechanical origin, and he was inspired by the shapes of robots and the automobile itself.

Parts from the Chevrolet Volt [9], known as the Vauxhall Ampera in the United Kingdom, were reworked to make the curvaceous surface of the tree. The glowing tree is set on a framework of engine parts that create the tipi shape of the tree. The sleek and aerodynamic shapes of the Volt’s exterior is recognizable throughout the tree’s leaves and branches, which are draped with a string of glowing LED lights.

Sidled up next to the tree is the Vauxhall Ampera itself – almost like an eco-friendly present under the Christmas tree [10]. Card wanted to incorporate the electric car into his installation, so he used it as a power source to illuminate the tree. The festive design celebrates the electric car [11], while bringing a bit of eco-art to the filling station. It will remain on display until January 6, 2013.
