Gallery: Gensler’s LGBT Affordable Senior Housing to Break Ground in Ch...

The building will be topped off with an extensive green roof, along with an intensive green roof for resident's use on the second level

Gensler was the architect for the LEED Silver Center on Halsted, which is a community center dedicated to the LGBT community with almost a quarter of its programs dedicated to seniors. Center on Halsted and the Heartland Housing Alliance will run the program jointly offering shared spaces, community programs and 79 units of studio and one-bedroom apartments.

The project will include the adaptive reuse of a 1907 police station, one of the oldest in the nation. Adjacent to the police station will be a new six-story volume with retail on the ground floor and housing in the upper floors. The building will be topped off with an extensive green roof, along with an intensive green roof for resident’s use on the second level. This volume will also include a large family dining room and a flexible multi-purpose room for residents use. Gensler is designing the entire project to meet LEED Silver standards with the help of high-efficiency fixtures, finishes with high recycled content, and high-efficiency mechanical systems. Ground breaking for this project is expected to happen at the end of May.
