GM and LG Join Forces to Manufacture Electric Vehicles

Industry giants General Motors [4] and LG Group have just announced that they are joining forces to design premium electric vehicles. LG will bring its expertise in battery systems to the relationship, enabling General Motors [5] to expand their fleet offer of electric vehicles. The partnership will benefit consumers by providing the latest and best fuel-efficient technology at a faster rate.
GM’s partnership with LG could make them the leading manufacturer of electric vehicles [6] in the industry. Working together they could find innovative solutions to electric vehicle design, and create more vehicle options for their customers while raising the bar for the entire industry [7].
Recent worldwide emission and fuel consumption regulations also motivated the partnership. The U.S. Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) must be 54.5 mpg by 2025, a goal which can be met by the usage of electric vehicles.
New to the automotive industry [8], LG engineers will work closely with GM on vehicle structure and design. LG already provides the battery cells for GM’s Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera [9], and the relationship tightened with the introduction of the Chevrolet Cruze electric vehicle. The partnership is a giant step for the advancement of making electric vehicles on par with traditionally fueled vehicles in the eyes of the consumer.
