General Motors is set to unveil the all-new 2014 Cadillac ELR next Tuesday at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, but in advance of the big reveal the automaker has released a new teaser photo of the range extended electric vehicle. The fresh pic shows an ELR prototype wrapped in camouflage driving through the mountains of Southern California for key development tests including steep grade performance and higher altitude operation.

The 2014 Cadillac ELR is based on the Converj concept, and it will use the same extended-range electric drive system as the Chevy Volt. It will be powered by an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. The ELR uses electricity from the lithium-ion battery as its primary source of power, but when the battery is depleted the four-cylinder engine kicks in.

Cadillac customers are going to enjoy the unique features ELR will bring to the market. We’re going to change the way people think about luxury and electrification,” said Chris Thomason, ELR chief engineer.

We will have all the live photos from the show next week.
