GM To Invest $162 Million Into Chevy Volt Production Plant

It looks like winning the title of Green Car of the Year has done wonders for the Chevrolet Volt — shortly after receiving the award GM has announced plans to invest $162 million into three small car manufacturing plants — one of which is solely responsible for the Chevy’s Volt’s generator . The added investment will see the re-hiring of a number of laid-off workers as well as the creation of new jobs as GM prepares to launch of the eagerly anticipated vehicle.
GM’s manufacturing plant in Flint is to receive a large portion of the investment not only for its role in the Chevy Volt’s production, but also as it builds engines for other models. In the wake to the Volt’s acclaim GM is rumoured to ramp up its domestic production to 800 engines per day by the end of 2011. This will increase to around 1,200 engines per day by 2012.
“This investment is essential in ensuring we can meet the expected high demand for the Chevrolet Volt, Chevrolet Cruze and a small car that will be produced at our Orion Township facility,” said Kathleen Dilworth, Flint Engine Operations plant manager. “These three facilities will continue to play a key role in GM’s resurgence and efforts to bring to market vehicles with segment-leading fuel economy.”
The Chevy Volt’s numerous awards have sealed GM’s reputation as a leader in the green auto industry, and the fact that the Volt is an all-American car has made the company even more popular. Of course the car still has its critics , but upon its nationwide release next year, it is expected to be among the most popular green cars in the world.
As Joel Ewanick, VP, U.S. Marketing, General Motors said at the Las Vegas Auto Show, “The Volt’s a transformational technology that will lead our industry into a new age of vehicle electrification.”
