Google Teams up With Blue Line for Real-Time Energy Monitoring

Energy monitoring is one of the simplest and most effective ways to lower your home’s environmental footprint — as well as your power bills. Systems such as Google’s PowerMeter allow you to check your power usage and can help shave 5-15% off your annual energy bill. In a bid to increase the connectivity of their energy monitoring tool, Google just announced an alliance with Blue Line Innovation that will allow consumers to measure their carbon footprint via a PC or smartphone.
Google’s PowerMeter is a free energy monitoring tool that allows households to measure their energy usage as well as their costs. By combining the meter with Blue Line’s PowerCost Monitor , users will now be able to view their home’s energy consumption from anywhere online. The setup includes features such as tracking energy over time, always-on power, predicting costs, budget tracking, and community sharing.
Peter Porteous, CEO, Blue Line Innovations said, “We are very pleased to be partnering with Google PowerMeter today. Our WiFi launch and partnership with Microsoft Hohm was very successful and now we are able to offer consumers even greater choice and control over energy usage”. “This really signals our business and product strategy. At Blue Line we see ourselves in the access to data space. Our patented and proven optical sensing technology has been on the market since 2004 and provides a safe, universal and do it yourself (no electrician required) solution for homeowners. The PowerCost Monitor turns dumb meters into smart meters and smart meters into even smarter meters.”
Reports state that only 7% of smart meters installed are set in broadcast mode, however the market expects to see an increase in the devices with 50% of the market having them in place by the end of the next decade.
