Last week the Inhabitat team was excited to attend The Green Depot opening party in New York City. The new flagship Green Depot retail store, located on the Bowery, is the Brooklyn-based company’s first foray into retail destination. As a supplier of eco-friendly building materials, the company has been operating since 2005 through its showrooms and warehouse in Brooklyn, and is somewhat like a green version of Home Depot. Open and airy, the new flagship store offers a variety of items from no-VOC paint to energy monitors, to cleaning supplies to kitchenware, making it a smart resource for any eco-conscious New Yorker. We found lots to love about Green Depot, from its handy and educational organization of building supplies, to it character as a fun shopping destination (complete with scrumptious organic chocolate!)
- The Green Depot Cleaning Station is a cleaning supply dispenser that suspiciously resembles a beer tap, and encourages customers to re-use their containers to fill up on cleaning supplies
- A Kid/Baby section with the cutest selection of eco-friendly toys, garments and bedding for your tot
- Mini-showrooms allow customers to experience the different building elements sold at Green Depot
- Signage and Rating System: To help customers navigate, the store uses an icon system to designate how and why a product is green based on five categories: air quality, conservation, local, energy, and social responsibility.
Green Depot is impeccably well organized, with signage illuminating each individual section of the store, and labeling/ratings on every product to help guide a shopper through the complicated nuances of ‘green’. There were also a bunch of cute and quirky store innovations, such as a cleaning product refill station and paint mixing section. Some of the highlights included:
While well-organized and meticulously labeled, the store still manages to instill a sense of discovery and creativity that will appeal to any DIY-er. Console tables piled with featured items and shelves lined with strategically-placed products make the store feel like a comfortable supply closet worthy of a journey across town to hang out in. The store also has its very own sense of character through unexpected, cheery details such as the unique teardrop-shaped lighting (an extrusion of Green Depot’s logo). Working to make sustainable living accessible and affordable to all, the new Green Depot flagship store is a great destination for anyone interested in learning a little bit more about how to green your home and your life.
