GREEN RANT: Lame Eco-Art

So, by this point, I think it’s pretty clear that we, the humans, have messed up on a pretty grand scale. You don’t need me to read you the stats again. We need several more planets. We make and consume a lot of crap. There are islands of crap in the ocean. There’s crap in the rivers, crap in our bodies, crap in the air. All of this crap is difficult to digest, you know, on a daily level. Nobly, many artists are facing this pile of crap and trying to make compost from it. Problem is, some eco-art is actually pretty crappy.

yeah, its one of those unspoken things that really needs to be said out loud. one of the things i’ve always loved about inhabitat writers. keep it up everyone!

  3. I am an artist that embraces recycled materials and trash within my art and craft. Since the 1970s. I understand what you are saying but trite and poor work is just that…regardless of the materials used, or the decande in which they are created.

what often bothers me about Inhabitant (I am a huge daily fan ) is that in the mission of this Green Blog is the unceasing promotion of massive consumptions . Green or not, its advertising buying, and consuming, instead of making due and creative reuse. Instead of reusing clothing, or changing it into new fashion, we feel the need to buy more clothing in bamboos, or pesticide free cottons. Instead of buying and old home, we constantly see new structures, new cars, new furniture, new new NEW. Massive consumption is NOT green.

I do love Inhabitant…but in promoting written pieces like this, why not show the other side? To stop consuming so many resources. I realize advertising help pay for the blog but its clear to even a 3rd grader that buying new things is not healthy for the planet. Healthy for the economy, but not green.
