The Sycamore House replaced an existing home, although roughly 75% of the materials from the original house were reused and Kovac brought in a herd of goats to eat up the vegetation! Only then did he proceed with his own three story home, which has a discreet street-side facade embellished with art from Julia Sykes and a cantilevering stair connecting all the levels. Almost entirely powered by a photovoltaic array and cooled in part with a geothermal system, the home nonetheless has a compact energy footprint thanks to efficient appliances and superior thermal massing.

Water conservation has been taken into account as well with a series of low flow fixtures, and all of the building materials used are sustainably-sourced. These include reclaimed floors and recycled glass tiles in the bathroom, as well as FSC-certified timber and high fly ash content concrete. Only non-VOC paint was used and the vertical layout ensures optimum natural ventilation. Albeit modern, this home packs a serious green punch and we love it!
