Phillips' Large New Vertical LED-lit Urban Garden Brightens Food Security in Indianapolis

One of the largest indoor commercial farms with LED lighting will be unveiled today at the AmeriPlex Industrial Park in Indianapolis. Philips has partnered with Green Sense Farms (GSF), a Chicago-based commercial grower, to develop one of the most innovative indoor garden models. The new farms is expected to produce 20 to 25 times higher incrop yields a year thanks to LED-based lighting that uses 85 percent less energy than conventional sources.

According to the United Nation’s predictions, the world population will grow by around 2.5 billion people by 2050, and 80 percent of the population will inhabit urban areas. An increase in food production will be difficult to achieve, as more than 80 percent of arable land is already in use. This combined with climate change and extreme weather conditions across the globe will require an alternative solution for tackling food shortage issues.

Philips’ new LEDs designed specifically for indoor gardening can be placed close to the plant and ensure complete uniform illumination. The GSF garden comprises 14 25-foot-tall growing towers in two huge, climate-controlled rooms, and is now outfitted with Philips’ LED lights tailored to their specific crops. It uses vertical hydroponic technology and LED lights – a method that eliminates the need for harmful pesticides, fertilizers or preservatives. While some researchers claim that certain types of low-intensity LEDs can contain hazardous substances, they still appear to be the best choice regarding light quality, energy use and environmental footprint.
