Theresa Spurling-Wood wanted to help children and parents understand how many plastic bags the average person uses in 6 months. This Halloween she crafted a costume from reclaimed bags, and talked with as many people as possible while they were waiting in line to enter the Santa Fe Boo at the Santa Fe Zoo. Her efforts payed off, and she converted numerous people over to cloth and reusable bags! Over 4,000 people attended the event.

This year for Halloween, Juan Lopez went as a YouTube webpage he crafted himself. First her created the page online, printed it on recycled paper, pasted it onto a piece of recycled cardboard, and then cut out the video area for his head. He spent the night going bar hopping as a “live stream”.

Post-Packaged Jellyfish Halloween Costume

Joshua Smith had been collecting all the packaging supplies that his office had received for a few months and he wanted to make a cool costume out of the pieces. The jellyfish tentacles are made with packaging balloons and strips of bubble wrap, while the bell is made of layers of packaging balloons and saran wrap over a metal wire frame. LEDs and iridescent plastic scraps are sandwiched between for a cool lighting effect.

Eva Petakovic came up with the idea for Mr. Bog Bord while walking in the park. She saw a beautiful bright yellow gingko tree that was shedding its leaves and decided to collect those that had fallen to the ground. Using the leaves, she created Mr. Bog Bord, the friendly yellow bird.

Tree and Tree Hugger Halloween Costume

Deanne Lovan stands 6’1″ tall, so she decided to dress up as a tree for Halloween – and her husband followed suit by dressing up as a tree-hugger! This two-part costume is a great option for couples, and it’s made from recycled materials found around the house (and the backyard).

HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME

Step 1:

Create a “tree trunk” by sewing a large piece of burlap so that it drapes like a robe. Make fingerless gloves by cutting an old pair of brown socks.

Step 2:

Collect branches and leaves outside and use a hot glue gun to attach them to the burlap. Attach additional branches and leaves to an old hat (Deanne used a cowboy hat).

Step 3:

Sew stuffed animals like squirrels and owls and plastic bugs and birds to the tree trunk.

Step 4:

Wear a pair of brown or green high-heel or platform shoes.

Breakfast Halloween Costume

Terrell Wong dressed up as the most important meal of the day – breakfast! The entire group costume includes toast, a latte, 2 eggs and a strip of bacon. All of the costumes are made entirely out of felt.

HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME

Step 1:

Choose your favorite breakfast item and pick up some large pieces of felt in colors that match the food. We recommend a felt like Eco-Fi, which is made from recycled bottles.

Step 2:

Trace the outline of your costume on the felt. Consider adding extra elements like a pat of butter on a toast costume or a plate for a coffee mug.

Step 3:

Cut out the pieces of felt.

Step 4:

Sew the felt pieces together to create a costume. If you chose an egg, consider stuffing some cotton balls into the yolk while sewing to create volume.

Little Red Riding Hood and The Big Bad Cardboard Wolf Halloween Costume

This amazing costume by Amber Dohrenwend is made of entirely recycled materials that can again be completely recycled/reused. The wolf head is made entirely of corrugated cardboard, cardboard egg cartons, cardboard fruit liners, paint and white glue — there is no plastic here! Clothes for the costume were thrifted, from Amber’s closet, or reused. The Little Red Riding Hood cape for her daughter was a costume two years prior. The family spends part of the year residing in Tokyo, Japan, and these pictures are from the Kawasaki train station.
