Gallery: “Growing Cities” ...

The signature Growing Cities projectis this Sill Farm. In it, water from the aquarium sullied by fish is channeled to the plants on the windowsill, which remove the waste as fertilizer and return it to the tank. A prototype of this farm was on display at the Science Barge in Yonkers and at Columbia University earlier this year.

We’ve seen Farm Fountains, and the idea of fish-waste-into-fertilizer has inspired many a green design. But Growing Cities is on a mission to grow crops in every corner and nook of available urban space — the nutritious, legal kind of crops. Their designs range from window-sill-sized units to housing-project-wide farms, including hydroponics, rooftop greenhouses, and lettuce growing inside your desk. Now if someone could just figure out how to keep a goat in a living room. . .
