It’s AWD with separate transmissions for each axle and four individual electric motors at each wheel. When you add all of that up, you get a peak output of 392 kW of power = 526 horsepower and 649 lb-ft of torque. Are you impressed yet? And in about 4 seconds you’ll be able to hit 62 mph (compared to the Tesla roadster which is only 60 mph). One might expect that this new version of an all-electric supercar would be a little bit faster, considering Daimler owns a part of Tesla.

Wired has it nailed with the details of the car, which is expected to be released in 2015. “The electronic controllers assure dynamically optimized power transmission, by means of torque vectoring, is sent to each wheel. The battery is liquid-cooled and rated at 48 kilowatt-hours with a capacity of 40 ampere-hours. Of course the car has regenerative braking.” The lithium-ion battery runs down the center of the chassis, while each wheel has its own motor and the gearbox is placed in the back.

The revival of a classic is something equally exciting. Classic cars were popular for a reason – the style, the feel, the look and the power all added up to a timeless piece of machinery. The SLS AMG supercar, when if comes out, will likely have that same fascination as the original version did, only this time with a much lower carbon footprint. As Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes AMG says, “With the SLS AMG with electric drive, we wanted to redefine the super sports car. For us, it is not just about responsibility. We attach just as much importance to excitement and classic AMG performance.”
