Happy Thanksgiving From Inhabitat!

We can’t be believe that Thanksgiving has already come round again, and as we savor the holiday with friends and family we’d like to take a moment to pause and give thanks for all of the great things that the past year has brought! It’s been an incredible year for the Inhabitat family, and with the launch of new sites , exciting new features , and a growing community of readers around the world we feel that we have a lot to be thankful for. Read on for our top 10 list of things to be thankful for in 2009!
We’re thrilled to hear that just yesterday President Obama announced that he will be traveling to Copenhagen on December 9th to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference! We’re certainly glad to see the US representing at this crucial conference, which will seek to reach a more effective international agreement on climate change and emissions reductions.
In case you missed it, this year we launched two brand new local versions of Inhabitat for San Francisco and New York City , and we’re thankful to everyone who has shown support for these new editions and joined us at our reader meet-ups! We’ll be hosting more events next year and have many more exciting site features to add, so stay tuned!
We’re tremendously thankful for our interview with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, which afforded us a great opportunity to report from the front lines on SF’s environmental initiatives. Gavin spoke passionately about everything from electric vehicle infrastructure to the difficulties of passing the nation’s first mandatory composting law, which makes this a CAN’T-MISS interview !
The presence of the harmful chemical BPA in water bottles and other containers caused quite a stir this year, and we’re thankful for the knowledge gained which allows us to make safer decisions as consumers. We’re also glad that the FDA is taking matters seriously and is looking into regulating the presence of BPA in canned food .
We’re also thankful for the incredible strides that San Francisco has taken this year by passing the nation’s first mandatory composting law . The law has been a great success so far, and if all recyclables and compostables are diverted from landfills, San Francisco could increase its recycling rate to 90%.
We couldn’t be more thankful for the time that Boston Bike Czar Nicole Freedman took to participate in our live webcast , where she discussed her trials and successes in setting up what will be the largest bike sharing program in the United States.
This tasty vegetarian delicacy saves the skins of countless turkeys come Thanksgiving day. Tofurkey , we salute you!
This year we were thrilled to announce the launch of our new sustainable fashion site Ecouterre , and we’d like to thank all of our readers for making the site such a success! We’re thankful for the opportunity to give eco-fashion more of a voice on the internet and for all the love people have been showing us!
It’s a great privilege to work with such an incredible team of talented, dedicated, and knowledgeable writers, editors, and managers whose enthusiasm for the environment and for building a better future knows no bounds. Thanks to all of our team members – new and old – for making Inhabitat what it is!
Of course we wouldn’t be here if not for all of you readers, who inspire and encourage us every day by reading Inhabitat, writing in to share your discoveries and opinions, and keeping the conversation going through comments. Thank you all and have a happy Thanksgiving!
