International architecture and planning firm Hassell [2] recently won multiple awards and commendations at the World Architecture Festival [3] in Singapore. One of the projects recognized was Hassell’s Common Ground [4] housing project in Camperdown, New South Wales, Australia. The project was built to provide stable permanent housing solutions for those dealing with chronic homelessness. The building’s design focuses on providing a wonderful blend of efficiency and comfort – both inside and out.

Hassell [2] delivers social and environmental sustainability in all their designs, and the firm has been well recognized for their do-good intentionality. The Common Ground Sydney housing project in New South Wales is a great example. The World Architecture Festival gave high commendation in the houses category to the 7,160 square-meter development, which was completed in 2011.

The project is targeting a 5 star Green Star rating [5] for design, and it’s designed so that the whole facility has barrier-free access to aid. Hassell [6]worked pro-bono with developer and builder Grocon [7], before providing a full design service at cost to Housing New South Wales. The “at cost” approach was taken by many of the project’s consultants so that the development could be delivered at a savings of over $1.4 million to the client. The 104 units at Common Ground Sydney are integrated with on-site support services, which are designed to help the residents while they pursue stability in their own lives.
