Gallery: The Capital: James Law’s Shiny New Commercial Complex Will Hav...

Currently under construction, The Capital by James Law Cybertecture is slated to be a pretty hot new commercial complex in Mumbai. With a super shiny exterior and a giant "digital eye", the mixed use office and retail building puts sustainability at the top of its priority list. Although a bit "out there" in the looks department, The Capital aims to change office building design and inspire a new wave of building in India with a strong focus on energy efficiency. In addition to its green innovations, a large LED display centered over a giant eye-shaped structure in the center will broadcast news and media to passersby.

Cybertecture, which is what Law calls his philosophy, is a combination of innovation, technology and the urban fabric in a way that is environmentally conscious and sustainable. Law’s goal is to create high tech buildings that are ecologically balanced and healthy environments in which to work, live and play. The Capital is one of his more recent projects and is currently under construction in Mumbai in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). With a series of offices set upon a retail podium, the commercial complex is a graceful tower with sinuous lines and an intriguing profile.

The complex will be most recognized for the large egg-shape in its front facade, inside which a large LED media display will hang providing shade for the interior and projecting news and media to the public outside. A PVDF coating on the exterior will minimize UV radiation and make the facade easier to maintain while diffusers in the ceiling will reflect natural light into the atrium all the way down to the lower podium level, reducing lighting demands. In addition, spot cooling in the atrium will reduce the cooling load, while operable windows in the offices encourage natural ventilation. Natural waterfalls and vegetation in the atrium will also help enhance the natural cooling effect.
