A community in Kathmandu, Nepal, has begun building an urban garden and outdoor art space for public enjoyment and education. The project is a collaboration between CATALiST design [1], a newly-founded sustainable design and community development organization, and Sattya Media Arts Collective [2] based in Kathmandu. The project is called “Hariyo Chowk,” which means “Green Commons” in Nepali. It’s an urban garden and outdoor community arts space – a place for people to learn and share ideas about art and sustainable urban living, as well as a place to simply enjoy some greenery away from the chaos of the city. It’s a very needed project for Kathmandu, which has almost no public green space at all and is rapidly developing into a concrete jungle. CATALiST and Sattya are currently in the last days of a fundraising campaign, and they need your help to reach their funding goal – read on to learn more about this project and donate to their Kickstarter [3]!

The garden [5] is being built through the volunteer labor of community members, using mostly recycled and natural materials obtained from around the city. The project is also conceived as a forum for people to learn and teach one another. The process of designing and building the garden will include workshops and other community events meant to spread knowledge about organic agriculture [6], waste management, natural building, and other useful sustainable design techniques.

The Hariyo Chowk crew is raising money through Kickstarter, an online fundraising platform. They have 5 DAYS LEFT to reach their goal of $9,000, or they forfeit everything they’ve raised so far (about $7,000). Please support them by donating what you can today [7]. More detailed information about the project can be found on their Kickstarter page, as well as on the Hariyo Chowk Facebook Page [8].
